Pro Tips from Capt. Garret Lacy
Fishing in August is Hot, both literally and figuratively! Getting out early is better on you and better for fishing! In the heat of summer most species feed once per day, and the mornings tend to be more productive. I’ll be out there fishing and wearing Huk’s new A1A line of clothing. This collection is designed to be the very light and totally breathable, just for the long hot days of August. Available in a hoodie, a button up fishing shirt or shorts the A1A line is built for long days on the water while keeping the sun at bay!
Inshore Fishing
Inshore fishing is very productive with multiple species to catch. Several of these species are Red Drum, Seatrout, Flounder, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Whiting, and Shark. Fishing around creek mouths and points where the current is creating a “rip” is a surefire start to a good day. I generally use Mud Minnows under Popping Corks. At low tide, casting a Carolina Rig around docks and structures is productive too.

Offshore Fishing
Nearshore and offshore fishing are great! Trolling in the early mornings for King Mackerel, Barracuda, and Amberjack make for a great time. We generally catch live Menhaden in and around the harbor for bait. In the heat of the afternoon, drop down to the bottom for several species of bottom feeders. It’s not uncommon to see several varieties of Grouper, Snapper and Sea Bass. Keep your Fish Rules app handy for the best method of specie identification.
