The ex-Dallas cop who was convicted of murder for shooting her unarmed neighbor to death in his apartment, was sentenced to a decade in prison on Wednesday. Guyger was reportedly sexting with her boyfriend and married work partner before she mistakenly entered the wrong apartment and shot and killed Jean.
Amber Guyger received the sentence after the family of her victim, Botham Jean, delivered emotional testimony in the courtroom. Racist and offensive texts and social media posts by Guyger were also revealed. Prosecutors had sought at least a 28-year sentence for Guyger, since Jean would have celebrated his 28th birthday last Sunday. Guyger is 31. (NBC News)
What a tragic incident. There are no winners here. But, there is a lesson in forgiveness. During an impact statement by the victim’s brother, Brandt Jean, he not only forgave Guyger but asked for permission to give her a hug in the courtroom.
She was then escorted out to begin serving her sentence.
